Some of you may be wondering what’s been going on with my roller derby life (and those who aren’t, well, piss off) since I used to blog about it ALL THE TIME. I made the difficult (and sad) decision to drop out of Burning River Fresh Meat program the week we were moving to Pittsburgh. Everything was completely overwhelming and more stressful than I imagined (or really could handle), so something had to give — and unfortunately, derby was it.
I wanted to take the time to do learn the city, meet some new people, get involved… shit, maybe even find some new work — settle a bit before making a new routine. Watching ANTM is totally weird, by the way, considering I’ve ALWAYS been at practice on Wednesday nights. And frankly, I’d much rather be skating. I’ve been working out and running (thanks to a workout facility in the building… what a concept!) to keep up my endurance and strength. I will not be returning to non-sexy arms anytime soon, thankyouverymuch. My ass misses the crossovers though, for serious.
It’s been three weeks since I’ve been on my skates, and I am getting all crazy-legged over here. I need to skate! Before I left, I enjoyed some bruises at the hands (or hips and shoulders) of Blood & Thunder Boot Camp — my last week of roller derby. It was so amazing skating with vets and learning from some pros. And whooped my ass. I’m looking forward to traveling to Toronto for the B&T camp again in December.
So, since Steel City doesn’t have tryouts until March, I’m looking into other options. There is no wRECk derby in Pittsburgh, which is quite sad (and if anyone wants to start one, I can help at any capacity that I’m allowed!), so I’m thinking about practicing twice a week with the Little Steel Derby Girls. Driving to Youngstown a couple days a week isn’t completely ridiculous, and they are are growing team (non-WFTDA), so it could be a really great learning and new training experience.
If this arrangement doesn’t work out, then I’ll be on the lookout for some speed skating coaches who are looking to train a newbie. It seems Pittsburgh is more so cool with ice skating than roller skating (seriously, like one skating rink within a 20-minute drive?!), so I might have to adapt.
Who knows, I might be awesome at that too.
