Pittsburgh PodCamp (5!) was this past weekend. You can read my professional viewpoint of the event on my copywriting and social media blog. On this here piece of the Interweb, you get my opinions on the people. Because there were all kinds of cool cats in attendance — most of which are completely socially inept much like myself. Oh, how I love to fit in! And start 8,000 conversations that will never be finished.
I certainly had my fair share of sexy (nerd) glasses. Yes, my boyfriend owns a pair, but the second he puts them on, typically at bed time, it’s like an instant REM machine. And as we all know, it’s difficult to be turned on by someone falling asleep because we know how much work it will be to get them the mood. Even typing this makes me so tired…
Speaking of sexy, these geek events are totally my kind of scene — BECAUSE LEARNING IS SEXY, fools. Or even looking intelligent is hot, as far as I’m concerned. And I didn’t even need to show my nerdy binary tattoo to get attention.
I somehow missed seeing/meeting PittGirl of That’s Church. It’s only been a stalking six years in the making, and now that I’m in the same city, I narrowly escape her funky — albeit invisible — kung fu moves. But every time I see pigeons, I think of her. And Pittsburgh has a LOT of them.
Speaking of pigeons, Terra of SWF and I were surprisingly NOT shat on from a flurry of unexpected pigeon migration while in Mellon Park. I got to spend a little bit of time with Terra prior to PCPGH, which made my week. She’s totally down-to-earth — a universally cool chick — and I totally related to her session: an evolution into becoming a blogger. Even though I have been blogging since 2002. I might be an Old Lady Blogger. Yikes. She also was the first person to ever tell me in all those years of blogging that having a Media Kit is important. The more you know…
Before I moved here, I contacted a LOT of people about potential living spaces. One of those peeps was Erin from Burgh Living. It was one of those reading-the-name-tag and realizing, “HEY! I know you!” situations. Instant friends! This connection proved to be great networking in itself for a future project idea. Cue the collective awesomeness.
And speaking of AWESOME! Lindsay of Confessions of a Human Vacuum, who I recently started following on the Twitter after my move, was sitting all innocently beside me in one of the sessions at PodCamp. Little did I know after meeting her, I would like her even more. I vaguely remember her being a marathon runner or something by her avatar, which sparked an “active persons” conversation. Then I read her blog when the PCPGH weekend was over, and I was compiling blogs into my Google Reader. O.M.G. This woman is even more amazing with her words — and more importantly, with her attitude. There are too many people in this world who just accept that his/her life sucks (and endlessly complain about it via twitter, blogging and Facebook, effectively sucking the life out of you), but Linds? Nope. She’s living her life to her maximum potential regardless of her personal situation. I’ll let you read. And when you’re done? You must read this book. The book has nothing to do with her, but is helpful in dealing with life- and joy-suckers and those “fishers” that I mentioned in this post.
I met Lindsay (mentioned above, duh) in a session with the girls of BitchBurgh. All three of them are hilarious, and from what I hear, I have a lot of interesting reads ahead of me from their archives. What I found most compelling was their discussion on what’s too personal. While they draw the line at incidents deemed “too emotional” (such as death, for one) that’s where I have found writing to be most cathartic. Ironically, my line has always been drawn at the details of my own sex life (however much you feel I allude or hint at… even above in this VERY POST). And those girls… err, let it all hang out.
As far as I’m concerned, those are all secrets best left for the book. *wink*
In my last session at PodCamp, “Jose” showed up for class in sombrero. I do not have any further details, aside from asking WTF?! And thanks for the laughs.
It was a long weekend. Did you meet anyone interesting at PodCamp Pittsburgh?
