National Singles Week #2

Posted by Mel on September 28th, 2009. Filed under: Say hello to my Little Friends.

Next up is Ann — online persona: Monkeegrrl. I only found her recently, by way of twitter. Her post titled “I Eat Alone — and I Like It” reminded me of many, many dinners eaten alone — and totally cracked my shit up. I love her combination of passions — from social media & non-profit Public Relations, to crafting and reality TV, her fun reminiscent voice of “when I was your age” and thoughts on remaining single. Ne’er a jadedness in sight! Her plans for celebrating her single week are after my own heart.

Say hello, Singles…

What’s your demographic? That’s a really polite way of asking your age… brackets are acceptable.
47 - no brackets necessary

In what city do you live?
Akron - but I’ve lived a lot of other places that were more singles-friendly

What’s the single life like in that place?
There is not a big singles scene here - especially in my neighborhood, which is very family-centric

Backtrack for a second. How do you DEFINE “single” (or being single)? What are your perceptions on the gray area between being only either single or married? And have you always been classified as “single”?
Oh, I’ve always been single (not even CLOSE to being in a serious relationship either). Is that sad? I don’t think so!

Have a favorite happy hour spot for single persons just like you?
I like to hang out with my friends in Highland Square. They’re old like me, so we don’t really do happy hour any more.

Or a favorite one-(wo)man-only activity?
I like to go to museums by myself. I don’t like having to match my pace to other people.

Admit it, you’ve picked up a non-fiction book or two about relationships. Or read an online article advising you of some unknown new “trick” for your future dating success. Or became interested in a particular study of statistical evidence of a certain awesome single place on Earf. Which one? And did you learn ANYTHING — even if that anything was something completely ridiculous?
For awhile, everyone was saying that you could meet single guys at the grocery store or the laundromat. I’ve never found that to be true. Home
Depot is good - but I’m just not good at picking up guys in stores. I feel
like I’m intruding on their shopping mission.

Tell me the most AWESOME aspect of being single. There are many. Choose one.
I like that my life is my own and I don’t have to answer to anyone.

What do you NOT like about being single? Yeah, there are several of those too. Pick one, please.
When I bought my house, I really wanted to share the experience with someone.

Do you write about your dating and relationship experiences? If you don’t write, do you have a favorite single person’s blog you enjoy? (Aside
from mine, of course).

I don’t really write about dating in my blog, because my mother reads my blog. If I ever am in a serious relationship, she’s going to find out about it the day before the wedding.

Have a favorite single-something story to share? Here’s your chance to write your mini rom-com, or just a comedy or a horror movie. And here, you can tell one of each, if you will.
I would be happy to write about what it’s like to be the last single person on earth. It’s both great and terrifying at the same time.

How do you intend to celebrate YOURSELF as part of National Singles Week?
lots of cheese.
