It’s Christmas time… yeah, ALMOST Christmas time. Puke. Time to make stupid lists and spend stupid amounts of money on stupid people. Who does that? Well, I did for years, but thankfully my shopping list has been drastically cut this holiday. You know what’s on my list (and has been at least every year since my first German class in 8th grade) — chocolate.
A gift that keeps on giving… you know, to your waistline.
Regardless, big yum for old-school chocolate. German Dominosteine (a delicious lebkuchen-and-fruit-layered, dark chocolate-covered treat) are my favorite. I search every year online, and always forget until it’s well past the holiday season to purchase. THAT will be my gift for myself this year. I will drool endlessly over an entire package, make no question of it. The local German store — which I forget about each and every time during our West Side Market trips will be my main source. You better not disappoint! Or I will find a German tourist…
I love receiving a mixed box, attempting to figure out which has Mmmm Marshmallow filling or the Ever-Disgusting Toffee.
Be that as it may, as a guest with someone-who-shall-not-be-named’s family during last year’s Christmas celebrations, I brought a box of imported chocolates because it truly is the perfect easy hostess gift (and being far from home, bringing home-cooked pastries was not an option). I thought it was extra important to work some sort of ethnic deliciousness in my favor — mixed chocolate goodies (or perhaps, be “that girl who brought yummy chocolate” in the minds of Christmas futures).
My bosses from years ago gave me a giant five-tiered tower of boxes filled with truffles — all different flavors and fillings — as a holiday present. While I would have rather had the extra $60 bonus in my paycheck they probably spent on this thing, they were delicious. But seriously, FIVE towers of chocolate? That shit lasted until St. Patrick’s Day — you know, when it was time to move in on the Irish Coffee-liquored truffle box. I’m fairly certain that gift resulted in my infamous Secretary Spread of 2004.
I know this girl would not pass up a good box of chocolates regardless of the holiday. Om nom nom nom.
What is your hostess gift for the holidays? Have you ever given chocolate as presents — to coworkers, friends or family?
