In my early 20s, the family had a condo in a Myrtle Beach Resort. Wow, I look at the place now, and it is a completely different world.
On one of those vacations, I met Vacation Exemption (a boy, duh). He had all those fine qualities that a female craves in her 20s (and subsequently shuns in her 30s): a bartending job on the beach, an identical twin, a life wholly defined by the confines of a Myrtle Beach Hotel.
Regardless, I was positioning my life to move there after enjoying one of THE BEST vacations of my life (oh, the inexperienced traveler). I looked through countless resort living brochures (and thought my own bar salary at the time was sufficient). I was also (finally) broken-up from HSS, which allowed a certain freedom to… ahem, explore.
Immediately before my second scheduled visit to The Beach within a month (this time, with a friend), did I meet The Fiance here in Cleveland. That meeting obviously changed the direction of my beach life to suburban subsistence. We moved in together three weeks later.
For the life of me, I cannot remember Beach Boy’s name. I know he had one of those male names where there should be double letters together, but instead had only one of those paired consenants (read: “Tod” — see, with one “d”).
Man, I wish I had a blog then. I totally would have written about his super-tiny penis. Twin brother was dating an actual model — like one of those real models, not just looked like a model — so I imagine that Vacation Exemption had, well, the “short end of the stick” in that embryo. I think I even sent him flowers after vacation. That’s weird, Mel. Wow, I had skewed priorities.
I search through the Web site of all these newMyrtle Beach Resorts thinking maybe I will get to the sunny beach again — mostly on Cleveland days such as these (you know, the chilly wind; the sideways rain).
I imagine that the bartender is still there — still hitting on young 20-somethings — and more than likely a Natty Light alcoholic.
Do you guys remember Shag — you know, the movie? Man, I loved Myrtle Beach mostly because of that movie.
