808

808 is my favorite number. Not just 8, but 808. And I know you’re not supposed to start a sentence with numerics, but I was looking for impact. I haven’t figured yet it to be a bad or good omen. I do know, I’m superstitious enough that if that combination of numbers showed in ETA or ETD or flight number or whatever, I’m not traveling.

The story of how it began as my favorite number is rooted in early high school listening to “techno” music by 808 State. Sometime later, listening to imports in my first car, with 808 State playing, my friend noticed it was 8:08 on the clock. Then it was always “8:08″ every single time I looked at the clock. Seriously. It all somehow perpetuated from there.

I also had a potential tattoo drawn once too layered with hidden infinity symbols and 808s.

Then, one day I set a broken clock’s hands in my HSS bedroom to our anniversary as a joke to his lost memory. You guessed it, August 8th — 08/08 — which I never realized until that very moment. Geesh, that was so freaking long ago. Chalk one up to a bad omen. Was that really 14 years ago? Kill me.

OK, perhaps I am a bit over-obsessed with just eight. Or 38. (Not 28, HSS’s football number, ew). I also have a strange OCD tendancy to set the microwave at ending-in :38. Could be just 38 seconds, could be a minute and 38. It just HAS to be started at 38. I should probably be on medication for that.

I had a psychic once tell me I would live to be 81. Since I only half-ass believe in all that crystal ball crap, age 18 was a horrible existence for me. (I was convinced she misread the numbers and I was actually going to die when I was 18). See, Internets, every week, I lead you a little bit further into Mel’s crazy world.

Be that as it may, here’s my 808 horoscope:

Your horoscope for August 8, 2008

You are about to experience a major change in your life’s direction, Melinda, and it may occur today. Keep your mind open to all sorts of possibilities, as you are likely to receive some important information today. Of course, you may not realize right away that it is important. It is only with the passage of time that you will look back on this event as being pivotal. Make sure that you don’t miss it.

Gosh, I guess I best not get drunk tonight.
